Moorsbus 2002
|
This year I made a slightly curtailed visit to the Moorsbus network (mainly due to the appalling weather) but nevertheless found it to be enjoyable. I started from Sutton Bank National Park Centre this time, as I was “calling in” on my way across the Pennines. I boarded the 0945 service 128,
with my £2.50 fare in hand. The
driver could not persuade the ticket machine to issue me with a Moorsbus ticket,
but thankfully allowed me to make my journey into Helmsley, so that I could
buy a ticket from a different bus. Given
the relentless drizzle I took shelter under the arches of the tourist
information centre. From here I could
dash out with my camera and photograph the buses as they arrived. My next bus was the 1030 service
M3 to Danby. Reliance, of
Sutton-on-the-Forrest, provided Volvo B10BLE / Alexander V293UVY, upon which
I purchased my ticket successfully!
The journey was quite light on passengers but given the weather I was
not that surprised. The presentation
of this vehicle was noticeably high. Upon arrival at Danby the rain
got heavier, so I abandoned the idea of walking down to the railway station,
and jumped on EYMS Volvo B10BLE / Alexander 315 (W415JAT) at the earliest
opportunity for the return M3 to Helmsley.
The driver asked me if I was enjoying the liquid sunshine……. Two others boarded at Danby Moors
Centre, then seven people boarded in the village, and much to my surprise another
dozen boarded out in the middle of nowhere!
Loading these people took some time (and all of the drivers change) so
a quick journey ensued across the moors.
The rain had stopped by the time I arrived in Helmsley, so I took the
opportunity to get some chips. Next I caught Scarborough &
District service 128 to Pickering. To
my disappointment it was worked by a Dennis Dart SLF – I was hoping for an
Olympian. Virtually every shop in
Pickering was closed – lucky I had grabbed the chips in Helmsley. From Helmsley I went to Thornton-le-Dale
on service M2, worked by Arriva Durham County Dennis Dart SLF 1602
(R602MHN). This bus lacked the luxury
of some of the others I had travelled on.
From Thonton-le-Dale I returned
to Helmsley on the 128, worked by Volvo B10M 217 (M417RRN). Here I changed on to the M12 back to
Sutton Bank, worked by Perry’s Mercedes Vario / Plaxton Cheetah X633AKW. Despite the poor weather, it was
an enjoyable day out – and very cheap at only £2.50. |
