The tall ships are visiting Hartlepool and from today until Tuesday three special park and ride services are operating. These are using a huge number of vehicles, mainly double deck, from operators far and wide under contract to Classic. I have listed the fascinating array of vehciles seen todat here - it's well worth taking a look if you can. Also, Stagecoach had Volvo Olympians on around half of their service 36 workings and three others providing duplicates on service 7 in Hartlepool, while Go North East were using 'deckers on the X35. Rail fans may also wish to avail themselves of the special class 47/57 top & tailed loco hauled services from Darlington to Sunderland via Hartlepool. Photos from today (lots of them!) will appear on my fotopic in due course.

03/08/10

Ray Parnaby reports that Arriva North East performed on the Metro replacement service on Sunday - and while this might appear to be the result of the imminent common ownership of Arriva and the Metro operator in Deutsche Bahn, the contracts for this and several upcoming Metro replacements were awarded to Arriva and GNE some time ago - thanks to David Sharp for the clarification. Steven Hodgson notes that VDL DB300 / Wright 7603 (NK59DLV) is now red. This service is to use refurbished DAF SB3000 / Plaxton coaches, though as yet only 1207/14 (V207/14DJR) have gone for refurbishment and neither have returned. Thus, Darlington have 1208/9 (V208/9DJR) ex Redcar and should have recived 1213 (V213DJR) ex Ashington, the latter in exchange for DAF DB250 / East Lancs 7443 (Y693EBR). These three should go for refurbishment in due course. Other movements (and thanks to Neil Wise for one or two of these) see VDL SB200/Plaxton 02/4 (YJ58FFB/C) officially recognised as summer loans at Durham, while sister 01 (YJ58FFA) is on loan to Durham to allow DAF SB220GS/Plaxton 4065 (S707KFT) to go on short term loan to Darlington. Thanks also to the vast number of people who have confirmed that Dennis / Plaxton MPD 1736-9 (V736-9DNL) are all now back from refurbishment and working for Redcar and that sister 1734 (V734DNL) is back after fire damage repairs, repainted and allocated to Stockton in place of sister 1713 (V713DNL) which is back in reserve.

Ray Parnaby and Steven Hodgson report, as listed on the company website, that Go North East have nine Dennis Dart SLF / Caetano in use on the Quaylink pending delivery of the new Optare Versas. Stagecoach North East ceased operation of the Quaylink service in Newcastle and Gateshead after operation on 17/07/10, when myself and Ray Parnaby grabbed some photos. The future for the Designlines is as yet unclear. Operation of the Quaylink services is to be taken over from Stagecoach from 18/07/10 and a number of euro 5 EEV Optare Versas have been ordered for this work (the Designlines are not transferring). It is expected that these will not be delivered in time and alternative vehicles will be used initially. The most recent ex Metrobus Volvo Olympains are now entering service in yellow, while the previous four are branded as "Yellow Bus", as noted by Chris Martin and Stevenm Hodgson. The most recent ones are expected to see off Leyland Olympians, with 3957 (G548VBB) being the first withdrawn. Other movements see ex Arriva MPDs 620-4 (V729-32DNL, V749ECU) move to Peterlee (where 624 started its life with Arriva!), displacing sisters 486/7/518 (V186/7ERG, NK51MJY) to Stanley, joined by 490 (V190ERG) from Saltmeadows. The Go North East website shows that severn further Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties have been acquired from Metrobus. These are 3988-94 (P817-9/23-5/9SGP) and it seems that these will replace Leyland examples. A major shake-up of services on South Tyneside (in conjunction with Stagecoach and Nexus) and the revisions to the commercial network in Washington have led to a number of vehicle movements. These see Deptford gain MPDs 521/73/4 (NK51MKD, NK53TMY/Z) and SPDs 8201-5 (V201-5ERG), Saltmeadows receive MPDs 555/63/71/2 (NK53TKT/LN/O/MV/X), Washington get Scania L94UB / Wright 5228 (NK54NWB) and SPD 8174 (S374ONL), Chester-le-Steet gain Volvo Olympian / Northern Counties 3911 (R553LGH), Dennis Dart SLF / Caetano 8282/3 (T429/30LGP) and Volvo B10BLE / Wright 4896-9 (V986-9ETN), Gateshead acquire DAF SB120 / Wright 8242/53-5 (NA52BUU, NK04FOP/T/U) and Volvo B10BLE / Wright 4910 (W491SCU), Percy Main now have SPDs 8207-10 (V207-10ERG) and finally Peterlee receive MPD 518 (NK51MJY). Arriva have implemented their "Big Change" service changes in Newcastle and South East Northumberland. As well as seeing many familiar service numbers vanish and new ones appear, there have been a number of vehicle movements and operations have ceased from the ex Go North East depot on Jubilee Industrial Estate. The Jubilee stock largely moved to Ashington, with the exception of Leyland Olympian / Alexander 7201/2 (H481/5PVW), which went to Jesmond and DAF SB220GS / Plaxton 4004/5/1/49 (S890/1OFT, S349KHN) & DAF SB220 / Ikarus 4108 (L532EHD) which went to Blyth. As planned, Arriva North East ceased operating buses from Bishop Auckland and Peterlee after service on 27/02/10, though Peterlee at least is still being used for storage. There have been a mass of vehicle movements as a result of this, which have been incorporated into my updated fleetlist and which are listed here. It should be noted, however, that Durham and Belmont work very closely together and exchange vehicles regularly and there have been some subsequent changes. Ex Arriva Midlands Scania L113 / East Lancs 265 (N174PUT) is now in service at Stockton, replacing sister 275 (P275VRG), which is now stored at Peterlee. Optare Vecta 1524 (L524FHN) has not yet moved back to Redcar and remains in use at Stockton, as do 1542/4 (L542FHN, L544GHN), though one of these may well be in place of 1504 (K504BHN) which is off the road with accident damage. 06/01/10 - Happy New Year!

Arriva North East Temsa Avenue demosntrator YJ59AZV is now being used for crew familiarisation at Redcar. The latest thinking is that all off the Tmsas, plus a number of VDL SB200s will go to Redcar (and some of these new vehicles should start arriving this month), with the remainder anticipated to go to Stockton - this could easily change, however. Trevor Gordon has reported Bishop Auckland MPD 1764 (NK05GWC) operating for Ashington - it is not known if this is a loan or a transfer.

Peterlee's services will move to Belmont and Stockton, while Alnwick's services will operate from Ashington. Combine this with the Hexham/Ashington deal, and it would seem that there will be much change over the next few months! Steven Hodgson notes that Weardale, Stanhope have added another Optare Solo to stock, this being YK04KWG. Existing Solo YJ07EGC would seem to have been reregistered GO03WMS (close examination shows it not to be their other Solo MX07NTS).

Steven Hodgson reports that Tees Valley, Eaglescliffe now have their BMC Falcon, BX55NZS, in service after a rebuild and repaint. It has received branding for new service 8 Middlesbrough - Teesside Park, which started on Saturday. John Atkin reports that Volvo Olympian / East Lancs M698/703HPF are in stock ex Arriva Yorkshire.

Scarlet Band, West Cornforth would appear to have sent their hired Caetano bodied Dennis Darts (and the white MPD) back to the dealer, as the ex Park and Ride Solos are now performing widely, in varying states of partial debranding. Those Solos that can be confirmed as still in the fleet are NX55FFO/S, YJ55YGG/H/K/L, as these have all been seen on the road recently. The use of duct tape, as noted by Lee Wardle and Alex Kennedy, on FFO is unusual....
